SCHOHARIE RESIDENCE

This stately 18th century residence is nestled in a valley in Schoharie County.  As the house had been in a farming family for generations, thankfully it had not been renovated to any degree.  Thus, a complete gut renovation was undertaken which addressed significant infrastructural deterioration.

While the intent was to keep the historical feel of the house, we were not slaves to history.  This permitted the introduction of the Porch, which serves multiple functions.  It increases the connection with the back lawns and patio.  It also provides a direct circulation route which is outside of the historical fabric.  So while the porch adheres to historical precepts, it simultaneously brings a modern update to the flow and feel of the house.

Much of the interior woodwork was preserved, including paneled wainscoat, fireplace mantles, the existing staircase, storage cabinets, and wide plank wood flooring.  Many of the fireplaces were restored to operation.

The attic space was transformed into a family play and work room.  The existing post and beam framing serves as a wonderful backdrop for this expansive space.  For increased light and views a large dormer was cut into the roof, which provides a sweeping vista of the ridgeline behind the house.
